Shortly after you obtain your “gold watch,” you may start looking at your living arrangements from an entirely different perspective. You may no longer need or wish to live in close proximity to your former employer. Many consider upsizing or downsizing homes for a variety of reasons. Determining where you want to live for the foreseeable future can be very challenging. Retirement communities abound, and choices are almost endless. Your F&M Trust relationship manager is familiar with planned retirement communities in the region and may be able to share insight learned from other customers.
One of the most difficult adjustments for retirees is often that of maintaining their social network or developing a new network of friends. Loneliness is a common challenge for us as we age and have less mobility or fewer transportation options. As you approach retirement, consider developing a plan for maintaining access to things and people you enjoy. Is public transportation available? Can I and should I use a ride sharing service, such as Lyft, Uber or Sidecar?
Develop a plan and a list of resources for items such as grocery delivery, transportation to medical appointments and reliable home maintenance and yard care contractors. Proactively seek information on what is available in your community to support retirees and allow them to remain in their own homes as they age. Knowledge is power. Your local senior center and office of aging may have information available to empower your decision making and maximize your independence.
